  1. Those lovable baby fishes...

Have you noticed our obsession with baby animals? We love cute little baby Harp Seals, Koalas, Pandas…Hell, I’ve even seen baby Jackson’s Chameleons that look sort of huggable. But what about baby fishes? Yeah, baby fish can actually be pretty darned adorable! Just think about these examples:

Baby Sweetlips are real cuties. I think it’s because their eyes are disproportionately larger than the rest of their bodies. And their mouths definitely look “baby-like”! I suppose the little ...

  2. Creating a ShadowBox Background

I recently purchased a custom Marineland (Perfecto) 120g. This time, I decided to deviate from my norm, the painted black background, and try an interesting concept that I have seen posted in various reef forums. The purpose of the shadowbox is to have it back-lit behind the tank, and painted to give the illusion of depth in your tank, as in looking through the tank into the ocean. I've wondered about re-using dead coral skeletons in a calcium reactor for years. I asked about the chance of the stony corals releasing PO4 into the water, but never got an answer of any kind. So I thought, I'll take some of the former colonies from my last reef tank and immerse them in RO/DI water for a week and then test for phosphate.

I filled the bucket with water, and tested it. Zero phosphates. In a week, I'll test again. It's not precise, but...

  5. Does this logic make sense??

I am contemplating setting up one of my 55 gal to get the tank cycling while I am building my display tank stand. When it is ready then transfer the substrate, LR and water from the 55 into it.

    Any thoughts on doing this?
