well after a few months i finally got my new pump installed. i have a 110g tall dt, 45g refugium, 50g sump. i drilled my dt for a sort of closed loop, with 4 returns. but i only drilled 2-1 1/2" drains. so running the bean drains with 1 full siphon, and 1 emergency i can't really have a closed loop, so i have to run it through the sump. the dart i originally bought on the advise of a local dealer wasn't enough to pump upstairs. he wouldn't take the pump back for exchange even though it had run less than a minute. so on the advise of Chris at reeflo, i got the hammerhead hybrid. today it arrived so i was all happy. i had to cut out the plumbing i had butchered when the first pump wouldn't work, and i had to use a little giant 4 sc. the little giant was my return pump when the sump was under my dt, but it was enough to get water upstairs. i figure it was pumping between 200-250 gph. now i'm pushing atleast 2500 gph, and running 2 reactors off of the hammerhead. i took 3 power heads out of the dt, 2 from the reactors, 1 from the refugium. my dt has great flow and the fish are happy, the coral's seem to be out more with the random flow from my 4 returns. the rock is starting to get cleaned off of the gunk that settled there despite blowing off for water changes.
last night i spent 5 hours scrubbing rock to get rid of gha, and that dam grape capular that won't stop.
i made a manifold for my 2 reactors and my bio pellets are flowing better, and my gfo seems to be gently moving.
the only thing is a hum in the plumbing. i have it hard plumbed but if it doesn't quiet down i may have to change some to soft. with an 8' run plus 13' vertical there's a fair bit of pipe to vibrate.
now i just need a mp-40es to help with some waves and i should be good.

well it's been a long few months now. first i wanted to move my sump to the basement, both for a larger one, and to take advantage in the cooling, and also to set up a real refugium. so in sept, while working insane hours i started. i get most of the plumbing done except for a few parts that i didn't have time to get. my town isn't well known for having salt stuff, and the only place that sells plumbing parts that i needed was only open when i was working. i still had my small sump running upstairs so no big deal. i purchased a new reeflo snapper hybrid for my return pump. the guy that sold me the pump say's it will work great for you. so i get it hooked up and find out it won't pump water upstairs, but he won't take it back, so i'm stuck. then i find a crack all down the side of my small sump, water pouring on the floor, and my daughter saying "i don't know".
so then i get layed off, find a new 50g for a sump, find a 45g tall for a ref. i already had the stand.
with christmas, getting sick for 3 weeks, and still no call back i haven't done much till today. i drilled the 45, build a glass overflow for it, found some glass for a top and some old lights. filled it up tonight. in the morning i'll put all the cheato that's taking over my dt into it. i wasn't fussy about putting the cheato into the display, but figured it would help keep the water stable till i could get a new pump.
my old little giant 4 sc is getting pressed into service as my return starting tomorrow, till i get back to work.
i mixed up 80g of new water today, and am just trying to get it up to temp so i can add a few things. in my 110 display i've probably got 5g of cheato, if not more right now.lol

so after all this started, i got a case of cyno. used chemi clean np. didn't have a skimmer but did run carbon through a hob filter, and lots of water changes. when it died off i got a few frags, and with them came bruch algea, so i've been battling that, now it's almost gone. i am starting bio pellets, and going to be adding gfo in the other reactor. the tote is my temp water storage container, until i find a couple of 55g drums. i threw a sponge filter into the ref tonight, because that power head is the loudest pos i've ever seen, and i know my daughter will want it off when she goes to bed.
hopefully tomorrow i can fire up the pump and see if i can get to the second floor.
anyone want a new snapper?

was a great ride this morning in a 41 year old pick up truck. found out my defrost leaks alot of air behind the dash, my engine puts out too much horse power for winter driving? and pucker factor doesn't help you stop in the middle of nowhere when the truck gets blown off the road.lol
could be worse but I'm not looking forward to this winter. there was grass here yesterday

hi all. i have a 29g sump and it runs fine. but my new pump will handle more flow so i want to upgrade.lol i have a 55g with a cracked center brace that i can use. i have the wife's permission to set it up downstairs and plumb it to my tank. the 29 has a ref, skimmer and return section. i was thinking to still use it, just as a skimmer and ref, then drain the water into the 55, half to the return section and half to another ref. the pump is the snapper hybrid, so will do around 1800g at 10'. i can run most of the water through the skimmer, then directly to the return. she 2 ref's will get a fairly low flow.
or should i just skip the 29 and use the 55.
i do need to put in some dividers in the 55, it bows really bad.lol

hi all. i need to find a quieter return pump before the wife flips out. i'm running the little giant and it's a little less flow than i want, and way too loud. i can go to 1.5" intake. i'm looking for something that'll flow around 1700-2000 gph.
the snapper would be good but i would have to reduce the intake a bit. any ideas? panworld 200, gen x pcx-150.

finally starting up my first salt tank. i've had freshwater for years. the last tank i set up was a 120g long with wet dry filter for cichlids. now i'm sick of fresh and going salt. the tank is a 110g high, on a wooden stand. i got a 40g long for the sump. last weekend i finally had a warm dry day so i could drill the tank. it's been sitting in the back of my pickup for 5 weeks waiting. drilled 2-1 1/2" drains, and 4-3/4" returns. i'm going similar to a closed loop, just not using a different pump and taking the intake and splitting it, most to sump, rest to return pump. i figured this way i can run my overflow full open, but not drown my skimmer. i'm am putting a check valve on the returns because the holes are fairly low in the tank. the holes are 8" from the ends, and 8" from the top for the higher pair, 18" for the lower pair. today i drilled the sump for a 1 1/2 return, and built a ref in it. do to the stand i had to drill the sump on the end, but i still wanted a ref in it, so i raised it up off the bottom 4". this will let me have a large return area, and i still fit a 6g ref in. tomorrow i need to put the baffles in, and scrape off some caulk. the wind picked up a bit as i was gluing the glass, and i got it everywhere.lol
hopefully this coming week i can find a return pump, have my ro/di show up and install it. find some plumbing(the only local store that carries it is only open when i'm working so i'm stuck till next friday).
i have 160 lbs of live rock in a rubbermaid curing. the sand i have for my dsb in the tank is here. just need to find some base rock and the acrylic overflow that i ordered which will be ready monday. hopefully next weekend i can get water in the tank. and mabye in about 6 months i'll have a fish.lol:)
