    DFWMACNA presents...

    Jean-Michel Cousteau
    brought to you by Seachem

With DFWMAS hosting this year’s MACNA (the Marine Aquarium Conference of North America), we have the unique opportunity to make it memorable. Each year, the host club tries to raise the bar, and we are doing that this September.

Saturday night during the gala dinner, the keynote speaker educates & entertains (edu-tains?) the audience for about an hour. Over the years, divers, photographers, aqua-culturers, film-makers and authors have all spoken. What could top those previous experiences? Who was uniquely qualified? We wanted a big name, someone epic, and ...

Starting Saturday May 12, this six part series should entertain most saltwater hobbyists.

Venture Beneath the Surface as New Nat Geo WILD Series Takes Viewers
Into the Rough Waters of Extreme Fish Tank Building

Fish Tank Kings Premieres Saturday, May 12, at 10PM ET/PT on Nat Geo WILD

More than 1,000 fish swim around a 15-ft. tall acrylic cylinder that rises from the floor of a movie star’s Beverly Hills foyer. In a high-rise NYC condo, a young CEO has a 5,000-gallon fish tank installed in his floor so that on his way to the bathroom he can literally walk on water. A rock star in Miami has exotic fish follow him all over his mega-mansion, thanks to the fish superhighway that connects three massive tanks together on three different floors. Extreme fish aquariums have become the ultimate status symbol, and the people who are on the cutting edge are in high demand. The series highlights the science of aquarium keeping and takes you behind the scenes look into several of the country’s most prestigious public aquariums and aquaculture facilities.

When a Club Hosts a Speaker
    by Steven Pro

As an aquarium society grows, they inevitably want to bring in out of town experts to educate their membership. The first thing that the club leadership needs to determine is, what would the members like to hear about? Do they want to hear the latest on reef aquarium lighting or would they prefer to discover the most recent breakthroughs in marine fish breeding? Some clubs prefer hands-on workshops on things like coral fragmentation, aquarium photography, aquascaping, fish necropsy, or acrylic and PVC fabrication. While other clubs might prefer more formal, educational lectures or picture heavy travelogues. Once it has been decided what the club is looking for, finding a speaker to fill that niche is much easier.

The Marine Aquarium Society of North America (www.masna.org) provides a database of speakers, their contact information, and their specific requests to provide lectures and/or workshops to their member clubs. I urge you to take advantage of this resource, but if there are speakers not listed, do not hesitate to ask the board so that they can assist in locating and contacting the speaker. MASNA is also pleased to make suggestions ...

Sept 28-30, 2012: DFWMAS is hosting MACNA 2012!

For the past 18 months, the Dallas Fort Worth Marine Aquarium Society has been working towards hosting MACNA (the Marine Aquarium Conference of North America) in 2012. For the past 6 months, contracts have been signed and an incredible amount of planning has gone into making sure this will be an event to be remembered.

The Sheraton in downtown Dallas is where MACNA will be held, during the last weekend of September. The hotel can hold 4000 reef addicts, so make plans now to attend. As many of you know, I'm a guy ...

Every year, MACNA brings in a big groups of speakers and these people provide a small image and a biography detailing who they are. Boring!! We want to get downright personal so we can know who they really are.

Sitting down with Christine Williams, the interview went like this:

    1) Let's start off easy... What was your first job?
CW: Working for a company that made artificial limbs. It involved straps, velcro and other assorted items. (Favorite limb?) A guy that wanted a beer bottler opener embedded in his leg! It's important to have the right tool for the job.

I have read countless threads on discussion forums asking for assistance with water quality issues. Considering how many forums are available to hobbyists everywhere, it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine that hundreds of queries are posted on a daily basis just in the United States. With the availability of search engines, the information is readily available having been answered time and time again. Why is it so hard to master this particular area of our hobby? Are our personal circumstances so uniquely different from everyone else’s? ...

    a picture update!

Thanks for all of the nice comments and advice.

@melev - I'm at 5 RBTAs right now, which is about one over max capacity. I've been selling them as they split and wander. It's a good supplement

I agree with a lot of what you're preaching. A couple of years ago, I tore down my tank to remove all of the fish with little white spots on them and treat them with Cu. Attempted to let the tank go

Phil that is definitely a solution I'm considering. What do you think about how to get power/plumbing to the raised section just build a chase from the utility closet to the raised platform? My only concern
