Getting a little help

Rate this Entry
Had my friend stop by today to help me with two minor projects on the reef. I had some Cat5 cable running to the Apex, but when I moved the modem and router to a different room, the wire needed to be moved. I just needed a new end crimped onto that cable, and he owned a kit with a specific type of pliers that would do just that. Now that that is done, the temporary cable I had running across the hallway could be removed because the main cable runs through the attic.

The second project was to help me get a second (new) Dart pump installed next to the first one. While he was at it, the one I'd installed about six weeks ago had a minor leak so that was resolved as well. Not only does it look better having these newer model pumps installed for 2015, they are much quieter too. The one that was taken off the tank today was really hot to the touch. It was obviously due for replacement.

The new Elos Phosphate test kit I got only reads up to 1 ppm compared to the Salifert kit I had that measured up to 3ppm. Over the years, I've seen readings as low as 0 (totally clear) to 3 ppm (bright blue). So when I used the Elos kit and got a bright blue reading, I was surprised until I realized it was measuring about .75 ppm - whew! I treated the reef with Phosphate Rx and cut the PO4 in half overnight. I still need to treat once more.
