Pre-filters. . . something got me thinking.

Rate this Entry
Ok so I was out doing some stuff yesterday at Home Depot and Wal-mart and since my sediment filter is really looking rusty already thought about picking up a cheap one and swap it out. Anyway got to looking and the one I saw available at Home Depot was like 30 microns which seems way high and the ones at Wal-mart are Dupont brand but have absolutely no information on them. So I put in an e-mail to Dupont to try and get the information and while I am at it figured why not put together some information about what is available on the net. After a few hours and some help from my wife I have about 70 different sediment, carbon, and DI filters compiled. I found some that are designed for standard purpose and even some that are made to help remove chemicals like MTBE or other VOC's another is made to remove phosphates. I know that our RO membranes along with DI resin will probably remove these compounds but I figure that having the info available may be helpful for some people who are dealing with really bad water even outside of the reefkeeping community.

If anyone has information that can be added let me know. I will be adding more as often as possible to get a good cross section of information and hopefully get a good chunk of the available brick and mortar stores filter info in as well in case you do need to make a quick pickup.

This is that I have so far, http://nacl-h2o.ventshop.net/node/20

Keep in mind that some filters will clog up more quickly, lowering the water pressure going across the membrane and thus reducing production rates. Not all filters are even the same size, such as some I've seen at Home Depot. Their thinner diameter means less surface area and they plug up more quickly.

Thanks for the info. I have noticed that the diameter in a lot of the filters differs from one to the next. I remember seeing some as small as 1 7/8" up to 2 3/4" as I have looked through all the filters. The bad thing is that a lot are marketed with very little info available. I just want to start compiling the information that I can find and get what I can from the manufacturers so that a wiser decision can be made especially when a local pickup is required.
