i would go with 2...if you wanted to go all out maybe 3 of these http://reefkoi.com/index.php?main_pa...oducts_id=1439
you can choose between 14 and 20k to get the look you want. they are priced great! im just not sure how they compair to some of the more expensive units maybe someone who ownes one will chime in

worst case situation buying 2 you will spend about 1000. if they do not meet your expectations you can sell them for ~800 leaving your light budget back at 2800 which is still enough for a top of the line fixture

How long is your tank and how deep is it

    72"long x 24"wide x 30"deep

You need to make sure that the LEDs you look at can go 30" deep. Also you are probably going to need 1 every foot at 30". I know aquaillumination recommends 1 every foot at 30".

Have you looked at the Vertex Illumina SR series of LED lights? I think they're amazing. They come in 200 models (Phillips LEDs) or 260 models (CREE XPG LEDs). They are also fully programable and allow you to select the intensity of light output. Additionally, you can simulate sunrise and sunset as well as a full moon cycle and even a thunderstorm (minus the banging and crashing...). Here's a link to a sweet YouTube video of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOACy...e_gdata_player I hope you can see/use the link. I'm on my phone so no guarantees... Anyway, the control for the light is through a wireless zigbee communication link plugged into your computer. Vertex calls the wireless link V-link. The price tag for the 200 models is a little above your limit at about $3300 for a 5ft model and about $3800 for a 6ft. The 260s are also on the high side at about $4000 and $4600 for the 5 and 6 ft models respectively. However, if I had the money right now these are what I'd be after. The programability and customizable light output, the way sunrise and sunset are simulated, the moon cycle, the option to upgrade the LEDs as new technology becomes available. I know I sound like a walking billboard, but I think the lights are amazing. I've been salivating over them for a few months now. If nothing else the YouTube videos of them are worth watching. Hope you find the right lights. Happy hunting!

I was looking for more of a pendant type style. My tank is built in the wall and the ceiling behind the tank is 10'. I like to have more access behind the tank rather than more restricted with a fixture resting 5-6" above the tank. I did like the link really cool!!!!
