150 G breakdown.

Rate this Entry
Couple of weeks ago it was time to break down the 150G in my parents place and move the fish and some of the rocks to my sump...
Was shocked to see the amount of detritus my sand and rocks trapped despite 50x tank volume flow.
Another shock was to not find a single bristleworm or critter in my DSB. Could this be the cause of my nitrates struggle lately? tank was only moved (sand cleaned 1.5 years ago)
Found 1 10 inches long Eunicid (sp?) worm in a big rock which could explain the multiple clams deaths.Decided to wash the sand with freshwater for a clean start in the 390 and placed the LR in a barrel with circulation after washing the rocks with aged tank water. Apprecicate any thoughts on this to prevent this from happening in the 390. I keep no CUC except for snails. And prefer not to have to stock hermits which tear up LPS and eat snails. Could that have caused this accumultaion of detritus?

Was a sad day to take this tank down althouh It only ran since 2008 when I upgraded from my 8 years old 80 G and was moved again in 2009 so never had the chance to really mature.
The Start in 2008:

at its best around Jan 2011:

As of one week ago:

Filled up my sump and the Waterchange tank connected to it and placed some LR and a Turbofloater 100multi SL (should be replacing it with my hurricone Cat 1 after it's cleaned) and a Carbon reactor and some pumps for flow.
only 1/3 was new water and used the rest from my frag tank and a friends tank water for more bacteria diversity...
Watching the slow fill gave me nightmares of the the full tank fill to come

And all the fish went in. So far they look fine, had some aggression between the 2 yellow tangs so separated them in two partitions. Should replace them together once I add some more LR.

And a better picture of the plumbing with the Waterchange tank now connected to the sump.

The pictures at the end are of the new sump and water change container for the new tank, right? Where are all the corals from the Jan 2011 pictures? Can we see the display tank?

I remember that 150g from years ago. I was a subscriber to your thread.

Would never forget that. Your help with all the queries on my old thread are partly what casueed the tank to get where it did!!!

Yep the last pictures are from the 390G sump and water change tank. All my corals are in my frag tank in the basement waiting for the 390 to be filled to be moved in. I did lose many of them beofre taking them out of the 150 dues some high nitrate which eventually caused STN on even the toughest corals I had. Did lose a few more in the move to the frag but luckily its finally getting stable and colors and growth are slowly reappearing. Will post a pic of the frag sytem when I fly back.

Your new tank is a 390g? Love it!

You are still traveling a lot, it seems. Did you sign up to attend MACNA next year yet? If not, click on the banner in the upper right corner of this page. The price jumps up October 1.

    Yep still traveling a lot.
I'm in Saudi Riyadh for this week and yesterday I met with Adnan who you interviewed in Macna.
Wish I could know my schedule for 2 weeks ahead to book anything in advance. Sure wish I can make it to MACNA...

Well, I think if you book it now, you'll be able to make your schedule work around it. Did you have a good time meeting with Adnan? Talk about a small world, for you to meet up like that.

Always have a good time with Adnan and another reefer here in Riyadh.
Each time I fly in it's always nice to see how their tanks are filling up and we always have a tank and LFS tour....

What was his favorite part of MACNA this year? I need to write him.

That seems weird to me Ive never had any trouble keeping a pop of bristleworms had lots of trouble trying to rid my first system of them when they were on the hit list years ago.

yep was very weird for me as well, only reason I can find is the wrasses completely decimating them which i think is not possible (only had 2-3 wrasses in the tank at a time) Another theory would be som high toxic buildup in the sand killing themn but that would have killed some fish at least. Nitrates did go up in the last 6 months and had many STN events on many corals and lost some... Will be breaking down the frag tank in line with the tank in the coming days which has a 6 inch DSB and we'll see if there are any worms or critters there.
