    It's been an interesting week for the reef.

    Alkalinity
    Testing alkalinity, I noticed that it was getting a little low, probably around 7 dKH rather than the normal 8 dKH. To raise it up slightly, I adjusted the pH controller from the 6.5 setting to 6.2 instead. The next day, I checked on the calcium reactor to find that nothing was coming out. Annoyed, I opened up the needle valve a quarter twist and flow resumed. The following day I checked on it again, and again no effluent. ...

  3. DFWMAS Frag Swap

    April 20, 2013 - Richardson Texas: Our club had the first frag swap of the year inside the community room of the St Barnabas Presbyterian Church on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. About 100 people or more converged on the swap to buy, sell, and trade corals.

    As previously stated, our frag swaps have come a long way from what I attended a decade ago. Gone are the tables full of small bags of water, replaced by aquariums lit with LED fixtures to showcase the abundant selections available ...

  4. Noise?

    Last night, I had a couple of guys stop by and we shared a few beers and chatted about reefkeeping. At one point, one mentioned how he didn't like the Vortech pump because it was too noisy. I looked at him, and asked him what did he hear? He wasn't sure, so I went over to the power center and turned off both skimmer pumps, both Dart pumps, the Coralvue saltwater circulation pump, and the dehumidifier. Then he said "But that's an Mp60." No, that was an MP60, an MP40, AND an MP10 all running simultaneously, ...

  5. A jellyfish & a sea turtle

    Another stunning video worth sharing. Did you know sea turtles eat jellyfish? I didn't until recently. As you watch the jelly at the beginning, around 0:16 you'll see something unexpected.
