Tank Entry

  1. That was rather painless (RedCyano Rx treatment)

As I mentioned previously, I didn't want to treat my tank for cyano because it makes my skimmer overflow like crazy thereafter. I treated the tank on Saturday the 14th, and while the reef was simmering quietly I pulled out the protein skimmer and gave it a good cleaning.

Before I get into that, I have to share this picture. After treating the tank, all the algae that was on this dead coral was gone, and the skeleton was bone white. The cleaned up coral made it much easier to see ...

  2. Day 34

Don't worry, I won't be doing daily updates like this, I promise. (Frankly, I tend to worry if people will unsubscribe if they get too many notifications, so I try to keep my blogs interesting and share when I have something of value to discuss.)

As mentioned yesterday, the biopellet reactor's flow was minimal at best. Even after cleaning the top plate, the pellets weren't moving much at all. That meant that the jets at the base of the reactor were obstructed, so I took it ...

  3. Day 33

Funny how things can change between blog entries. I picked up four new corals at Frank's Tanks last night, got them acclimated, dipped and placed in the 400g.

The cyano I was grumbling about was a little bit worse in the frag tank and I decided what am I doing waiting for it to go away when I sell the stuff that kills it sitting on a shelf for my customers? I mean, I sell the stuff I use, so why am I not using it? RedCyano Rx has been dosed. That takes care of that.

  4. Day 32

The reef is just over a month old, and it is going through the normal stuff like annoying algae on the sandbed. Some cyano has been cropping up here and there, mostly in the refugium but also on some spots of sand in the 60g and in the frag tank. I've been debating treating it with RedCyano Rx since that involves a big water change thereafter, but I may just go for it to nip this in the bud. The cyano appearing isn't a big surprise since the tank had a two-night-in-a-row spawning event from the ...

  5. Getting gear mounted

The area under the 60g needed to be better organized. With the stand reinforced with wood panels, it made it easy to secure the various devices in place. It's still a work in progress, but here's a quick update shot.

What you're seeing here is part of my Ecotech collection. Two Vortech Mp40w pumps are close by, one on the 400g and the other on the 60g. The large square object is the Vortech Battery Backup. This battery will keep both pumps ...
