  1. Trying out Salinity salt for the first time.

Last year I finally ran out of salt and shopped around for something new. I've enjoyed using Sybon Reef formula, but it's nowhere to be found. I did the Fritz brand for a few months, using about 750g worth... maybe more. I ended up buying a barrel of the Aquavitro Salinity salt, and today I cracked open the barrel for the first time. Here's the official page about it: http://www.aquavitro.com/products/salinity.html

  2. That's a first

About six months ago, I switched from the Milwaukee pH controller to the Reef Fanatic Micro pH controller. First thing I discovered was that their pH probe was a smaller diameter and required me to MacGyver a way to keep it installed in the calcium reactor.

Lately, my back pain has been so bad that I've been ignoring my reef to the point I didn't even clean the glass on the 400g and the 60g for days at a time. As the brown film amassed, I just let it go. I still checked on the calcium ...

  3. Return pump failure

I don't know when I got the Dart pump that runs the 400g's return flow (from the sump), but I'm guessing 2011. Maybe it's a newer, because the serial number label doesn't match the image from back then. So maybe 2012. Last night I was working in the tank with the flow off. When I turned on the return pump, it needed a little help to get started - which has been the case for the past week. Using a flathead screwdriver, I can insert it into the driveshaft's slot and give it a small twist and ...

  5. When you walk near your tank, look closely...

I walk past my 60g cube all the time, and always look how things are doing. What caught my eye made me smile, and I grabbed my camera to share it with y'all.

A snail was on the glass, but he had a hitchhiker. I've seen hermits make their way up the silicone bead to the top of the tank, but to see this one hanging onto the snail's shell with no exit strategy in place was pretty funny. There's some algae on the shell that the hermit no doubt wanted, but the snail wasn't too pleased ...
