  1. LFS: Coral Connection, Kenner, Louisiana

Before attending Fragniappe, I had the opportunity to visit this fish store. Coral Connection is a two-story business with a history. Years ago, it was a place to hang out, where you enjoyed a daiquiri and talked about the hobby. Over time, it morphed into a full business, but as you walk around you still feel like it used to be a bar.

As soon as I walked in, I was amused by the sign on the door.

Now that I'm back in town for a few weeks, I'm going to clean out the calcium reactor and refill it. Alkalinity has been dropping and I'm having to dose baked Baking Soda to keep up with demand.

  3. Apex updated to Fusion

For months, hobbyists have clamoured for Fusion. We learned about it in 2013, and by MACNA it was showcased to excited attendees. I attended the special Apex class Friday morning with about 75 others, and we loved what we were hearing. No more fighting network protocols, no port forwarding, no DYNDNS redirects, no email address workarounds. Fusion solved all that, and we just had to wait until November for the release.

It took longer naturally. December rolled around and a handful ...

  4. Stuff you don't see every day...

Yesterday as I was cleaning the glass and specifically near the area where the sandbed meets the glass, I accidentally bumped this acropora with my elbow. I use a plastic room key card (like a credit card) to clean the harder spots in the tank, and sometimes my arm makes contact with a coral. I always recoil and hold my breath hoping I didn't damage a colony, but this broke was quick. I watched the branch fall slowly toward the sandbed, and felt disgusted with myself. For the time being, the ...

  5. Next Wave was fun and I came home with a new item

After many months of planning, Next Wave was another good show. Attendees made it a point to hear each of the four speakers throughout the day on May 3, 2014. I ran my booth all day long, selling products normally offered online. Here's that blog entry, posted on Melev's Reef: http://melevsreef.com/blog/back-back-shows-05042014

When I was able to break away from my booth, I spotted a nice anemone that I thought would be a good addition to the Anemone Cube. I was told it was a bubble ...
