  1. A sump with Mantis shrimp zones

A customer recently contacted me requesting a project that included a divided section to house two mantis shrimp. These two zones flow slowly into the skimmer zone, and then into the return zone. The display tanks will drain into the mesh socks. An external pump will push the water back up to the display tanks. The customer will drill the sump for the bulkhead himself.

The sump has three mesh filter bags, rather than the common 200 micron filter socks because they don't clog up ...

  2. A custom order recently shipped.

This was a special request from a customer in New York. He needed the sump to be rather tall, and wanted the refugium zone blacked out. It's challenging because there's really no room to incorporate baffles and have any type of return zone.

The big bracket is for the new Eshopps rectangular filter sock.

  3. Introducing new fish into an existing set up

It is always a challenge to add new fish to an established reef, primarily because of territorial issues. Each fish in the tank has already picked out their favorite haunt, and they are not prepared to share space with a newcomer. As hobbyists, we always try to come up with ways that might work: dump them in and pray, add them after lights out, introduce many at once (shock and awe), or put them in a section divided off from the rest of the reef.

  4. A fancy upgrade to my RO/DI setup

Six months ago, I ordered two components for my drinking water, and yesterday it was finally installed. The first was a bladder tank. This holds the drinking water (RO water, not RO/DI) under pressure for quick on-demand water use. It holds 3g of water, so I can use it to make coffee, ice tea, and fill up water bottles like the wind.

Blue tubing was run from the RO system behind the refrigerator and dishwasher to the bladder tank under the sink. A small hole had to be drilled through ...

  5. An acrylic request

I had a request for a custom cover for a 10g aquarium being used as an ATO reservoir. This lid will fit in the inner lip of the 10g tank. A slot allows for both the tubing and a powercord leading to the pump. It has a small handle to make it easier to take the lid off.
