  1. Introducing new fish into an existing set up

It is always a challenge to add new fish to an established reef, primarily because of territorial issues. Each fish in the tank has already picked out their favorite haunt, and they are not prepared to share space with a newcomer. As hobbyists, we always try to come up with ways that might work: dump them in and pray, add them after lights out, introduce many at once (shock and awe), or put them in a section divided off from the rest of the reef.

  2. Live Aquaria / Diver's Den order

Yesterday, Fedex showed up with four big boxes from LiveAquaria. I couldn't believe my eyes.

I mean, this can't be all my order. When I'd placed my order, there was some discussion of quantity, and I replied with "Surprise me." I'm not picky - I love my fishies and I wasn't sure what they had in stock ready to ship. ...
  3. Day 365 – One year old today

Today, my reef turns one year old, but I can’t really feel the reason to celebrate. If anything, I’ve been really frustrated that my reef isn’t humming along nicely and showcasing beautiful corals that have been growing in over the past twelve months. Granted, I’ve been very busy over the past few months ...
  4. Last night, I saw stars!

As my vacation was coming to its conclusion, I looked up last night and was blown away by the vast number of stars I could see. It was dark, the moon was essentially new, and I was in the mood to try and capture a few images. I called up Jessy to remind me of the settings I'd need for my Nikon D90...

She recommended ISO 1000, f/3.5, Manual Mode, focus set to infinity, and to use my infrared remote after setting the camera to "bulb" (the next point past 30 seconds per image). With ...

  5. LFS: PureReef in Alpharetta, Georgia

Another destination stop I had to make whilst in Georgia was PureReef. It is a spacious clean store with attention to detail. The woodwork throughout the store was enviable and made the establishment enjoyable to peruse.

When you first walk in, you see the easy chairs facing the twin 400g displays. One is fish-only, the other a full-blown reef.
