To aquaculture or not to aquaculture that is the question...

Rate this Entry
With all the information on reef keeping online and on pages such as this one, I find myself wanting to try all sorts of new ideas. Lack of money is the biggest obstacle I am encountering in the hobby. I would love to start a propagation tank to supply my club members a place to store tiny frags of there most prized corals. This would also give me the opportunity to grow these corals out and bring frags to frag swaps and what not. I would love the hobby to be completely self sufficient, and oppose no threat to our planets treasured reef habitats. I think the more people that get into coral propagation will drive the prices of aquacultured corals down dramatically. I have made an afford to try and buy only cultured corals and tank raised fish. ok now that I am done with my rant back to the point. I am thinking of doing a coral prop tank. Any ideas on doing a small system. I am not looking to make any profit but to make the system be able to pay for itself. I have enough space to make any size system. If there is anyone in the Rhode Island area that wants to partner up and share the coasts that would be cool too, or is willing to donate preowned equipment. Any information that people have on prop tanks or experiences that could help me on my path to coral propagation would be awesome.

Running a propagation tank is similar to running a reef tank:

    Good flow
    Good light
    Good filtration
Daily dose of additives to maintain water parameters
    Daily top off
    Water changes
Fish to poop on corals as this feeds them

Thanks melev. I am going to document the whole thing so I will try to post everything in the diy section.

Shallower tanks are better as it makes lighting cheaper and maintenance easier. Flow is also easier in a shallow tank.

You can do a blog about it here. If it is a good one, we'll upgrade it to a permanent article.

I commend you on your efforts and I look forward to your updates. I can't contribute any advice since I'm new to the hobby, and I also planning on the cultured corals and tank-bred fish.
