Lighting descriptions

  1. Late night goings on

If you are nocturnal like me, you'll grab a flashlight to see what the corals are doing in darkness. I've used a few different flashlights over the years, but by far my favorite is the all blue one that Frag Junky / Orphek released at MACNA last year. It's so incredibly bright blue that corals pop with color.

  2. Measuring PAR in all my tanks

At the club meeting last night, I did a presentation on measuring PAR in our reef tanks and why it has value, regardless of the type of lighting choices we employ. I do try to focus on daylight spectrum more than 20,000 Kelvin, because PAR meters are designed to measure sunlight and not the blue spectrum.

Here's the PAR measurement of the frag tank. The light is a Reefkoi Evolution LED fixture that is three years old. The numbers are:

  3. Lighting for 60g cube

    Good day, Reef Addicts!

I have a lot of decisions to make for my new tank set up. (Rimless 60g 24"x24"x24") But there are two larger ones that are weighing on my mind heavily. The first one is my sump location (I'll do a separate blog entry on that) the second is my lighting system. I basically have my heart set on one of two options, but if anyone can convince me to change my mind, then props to them.

First option is to have 10 NO T12s.

    Okay ...
  4. Big changes

Fts from today. Changed out my lights to 2 Orphek Atlantik units a while back. Super happy with them and the changes in the tank.

  5. Ecotech's ReefLink arrived

Yesterday I got my shipment from Ecotech Marine. It included the new ReefLink device that was on display at MACNA two months ago. This connects to your home (or business) network to communicate with the Radion LED fixtures and in the future, wireless Vortech pumps.

Since I'm a beta tester, I'll be providing feedback about how it works to Ecotech. Here are some teaser pictures.
