I recently purchased 2 brand new MP10es Vortech marine pumps for $22 dollars a piece. they were shipped too my store and sat in a closet for about 2 years and then went on clearance so I could not pass them up!!!! now one of the pumps is fully operational and works amazingly. Recently I have been having some problems with my tank. My nitrates were on the rise, they ended up getting to 40 ppm, I did constant large water changes and started using bio pellets but things just got worse. Since then I removed the bio pelltets and went back to basics. I ended up discovering that my sand bed was the cause of my nitrate problems. Slowly I removed my sand bed and after all of it was gone my nitrates have fallen to below 10ppm.

If you build your overflow in the center of your aquarium does it need to be made with the same thickness acrylic as the tank? The thickness calculator says that it will require 1/2" thick acrylic due to the pressure of the water on a 24" tall tank. I am trying to determine if I can use 1/4" or 3/8" thick for the overflow as I don't think there will be any pressure on it since it will be filled with water.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
