  1. Breeding System Update

The last time that I updated Reef Addict on the breeding there were just shelves with no tanks/sump or fish. A little over three months later it is now operational with tanks, a complete sump, and all the fish moved from the prior system. Here is how it all took place.

29G Drilled and placed in the their positions.

  2. Continuous Improvement

Actually, we really are making improvements!
    Our plan for Saturday:
    1. Raise the water level in the sump.
    2. Raise the skimmer and TC bubble trap higher in the sump to improve functionality.
    3. Install skimmate drain line on the skimmer.
    4. Install standpipe on sump drain.
    5. Run sump water level checks with pump shut off.

We originally intended to use as much of the volume of the sump as was safely possible. The current water ...

  3. Tiny bubbles...

We have had cloudy water in the display tank, and thought we were dealing with fines in the water. We added an extension to route the water flow from the return over the long axis of the tank, and noted there were micro bubbles coming out of the return. We checked the skimmer, and the water coming from it had no noticeable bubbles. We did have lots of bubbles coming from the drain pipes into the sump.

  5. My new sump and the silicone project

The new sump was designed to fit within the steel stand. It is 58" long by 31.5" wide by 17" tall, using 3/8" AcryLite GP.

The layout is simple, with a big skimmer section, an equally large return zone, and a full length refugium. This was the best choice for the equipment I own and the space I had to work with. The sump is sitting on a 3/4" thick sheet of pink foam, which acts as insulation from the concrete floor and keeps the surface very smooth for the acrylic.
