Food Making Recipe

Rating: 5 votes, 4.80 average.
For about 6 months now I have been making my own food. When, I started my goal was to purchase as much of it as possible from the local grocery store in order to keep the cost down. In November, I did a teach for my local on the food recipe. Here is the recipe and a video that I made to go along with recipe.

MASM Food Recipe

Why Make your Own Food:

1) Allows for variety of diet: You can mix different things together in feeding. Your fish get variety
2) Cost effective solution. Most items in the recipe are at your local grocery store.
3) Can tailor your recipe to your own specific tank.

Foodmaking - Rules to Live By:

1) Go light on the fats. A heavy fat diet can cause fatal liver damage to your fish
2) For Marine Fish Try to avoid sources of fresh water origin. (i.e. don’t use catfish, etc.). There are some exception -- bloodworms, etc.
3) Buy a separate blender. Everyone will thank you

Food Recipe

1/2 oz broccoli
1/2 sheet Nori
1/2 oz carrots
1 oz shrimp
1 1/2 oz pollock or smelt
20 ml garlic guard
1 1/2 oz squid
1/32 oz oyster eggs
5 cubes cyclops
1 oz scallops

Mixing Instructions

1) Add broccoli, carrots, and nori into blender and chop finely. (This done to ease the mixing process later)

2) Add all other items into blender and mix to desired level. (I prefer to almost puree the mixture but you can make coarse for a tank with larger fishes)

3) Add mixture to sandwich bag and evenly flatten. (Remember to not close the bag complete until you are near the top. – This allows air to escape)

4) Freeze and serve by thawing in water.

Here is the video that I made to go along with the recipe.

Very nice addition. I cleaned up your entry a little bit to make it read more easily. Watching the video now.

Nice article! Do you thaw out your seafood before making the food? A lot of times when I process the food into a puree, it turns into a cloud of food in the tank when added and it seems the fish have a harder time eating. I almost prefer to keep the meaty portions somewhat chunky so it allows the fish to grab a hold of it and actually get it into their mouths. Other things I like to add - spirulina powder (health food store), garlic (either juice or raw garlic), selcon or other marine vitamins, wakame (Japanese dried seaweed that has to be reconstituted in water before usage - sold at most Asian grocery stores. I like this in addition to nori), and tobiko (flying fish roe, used in sushi - often also found at Asian grocery stores). Just some more thoughts.

Thanks Spleen! I usually just mix it up frozen right out of the freezer. Most of the fish in my reef are smaller, so the puree works for me. For larger fish, I would definately leave the mix a bit more chunky. As for the other suggestions, you can definately add all of those items. One of the nice things about this recipe, is that it you can add ingredients to it to you suit your needs.

When I designed the recipe, my goal was to make a recipe where you could procure most if not all of the items at the local grocery store. I wasn't able to get everything for the grocery but I thought I got pretty close. I was able to keep the costs down that way
