Frags from Florida

Rating: 3 votes, 4.33 average.
Over the weekend, I had a quick trip to Fort Myers Florida to speak to the SWFMAS club. They coupled the talks with a big frag swap, and I got a little crazy. I came home with two types of Macro Algae, about a dozen SPS, a dozen ricordias, and a giant Gorgonian. Here are all the pictures.

They were put in quarantine for about 20 hours, then dipped in ReVive for 10 minutes prior to being added to my reef last night.

The lighting was a mix of some Blue LEDs and some White LEDs, and the water was a bit cloudy from the Interceptor bath.

The corals were dipped / soaked for 10 minutes in a bucket.

Setting a timer is key.

Once dipped, they were immediately transferred to a small container at once, to avoid leaving them in solution as frags were placed in my tank.

It took about an hour to get everything in the tank, as the dipping process was done four times total (to get all the frags dipped).

Here's the macro algae.

I also won a few things in the raffle.

Marc, I would like to hear your experience/evaluation of the Reef Pods Tisbe. I have a good pod population going and just picked up a Blue Mandarin today (I have seen your mandarin diner), but I was thinking about getting some of the Reef Pods in the future.

There are definitely pods in the bottle, and the company drop ships from their vats to your door. You won't be getting pods that have been shelved in a store for a while.

One thing that was mentioned during the talk by Vince Rado was that you need to acclimate your pods, making sure salinity and temperature match before pouring them into the tank or refugium. Just checked my bottle and the salinity was 1.021sg while my tank is 1.025sg. So I'm adding some saltwater gradually to a pitcher with the pods and bottled water.

Very nice looking corals Marc! I'm going to talk with my LFS to see if they can get me some pods in the bottle. Do they come with a lot of pods in the bottle?

How did you get the frags back home(assuming you flew)?
  8. melev's Avatar
Henry - AlgaGen offers a few types, and you can order them online from the major e-tailers. I don't know that any LFS will carry them because of the short shelf life.

Robb - I brought a soft cooler (from the MARSH MACNA) in my suitcase. I filled this up with bagged items, and put it back in the suitcase for the trip home. Everything did well, but I was pretty nervous about them being damaged. My suitcase is a soft cloth type, not the hard shell I used to use.

    Hey Marc,

    What's this one?

Very nice. I love the macro as well! Thanks for sharing. :-)

I think it is an Acropora caroliniana - link to Google Images

Thanks. :-) I like that one quite a bit. Rather unique look to it. I'll have to watch your posts like a hawk (like I don't already) for a macro shot of it sometime. I'd love to get an idea of the polyps on it.

I'll be taking some pictures of it in my tank very soon, and they will be posted. Probably by the weekend. I too immediately loved it when I saw it. $20

I'm almost 99% positive it's A. caroliniana. There is a lot of that particular Acro around south Florida. I few years ago I had a big colony that I had some frags off of. One of the few colonies I lost when I switched to solar tubes. I think it was too high in the tank.

I have a new frag (now a mini colony) that is doing extremely well.

Hey Jeff, glad you joined us. There's another blog entry here where some questions came up about your tank. Here's the link: http://www.reefaddicts.com/entry.php...-last-Saturday
