Wow. I'd double check by using another test kit or going to a LFS to have them check. It saved my tank when I had been using an inaccurate test.

That was also tested at the lfs. They told me to use buffer...

Is that 1.7 meq/L or 1.7 dKH? If it is meq/L it isn't too bad...
  4. Djm's Avatar
    No its dKH

You've got a serious problem somewhere. What does your source water test, before and after mixing salt? What do you have in the tank? In the mean time... I'd find a place to drop off the stuff that's coming tomorrow until you get it figured out!

Using rodi water to top off. I only have 5 nasarious snails, and 3 pistol shrimp in the main tank. Nothing else.

Fine as in what? What's the number?

For now, turn off the flow going to your calcium reactor, but keep the circulation pump running. Close the valve to the CO2 tank and for the next few days just test daily for Alk and Calcium. Once the numbers are back in line, you can get the calcium reactor back online. My own tank is barely 2 months old, and I had to dial mine way back to get the numbers I needed without overdosing. It was tricky finding that spot since I was used to a full blown reef. I have the pH controller set to 7.4 instead of 6.5 to lessen how much of the media dissolves, and the output is much slower than previously.
Did you try this Just went back thur your blogs and seen you had reactor issues

I shut off the sulfur reactor completly, as for the calcium reactor yes i dialed way back to drip mode... Seems to be raising the ph levels a lot... From 8.0 to 8.15 . But i was also adding tsp. buffer 3-4x per day starting thursday night. checked alk this morning, was 5.8 dKH

I say was the cal reactor acidity eating it up. Buffer helps but isnt a long term solution, Id play with the reactor after the cal drops off. Lots of luck with your live stock shipment hope all goes well. I know after 5 months on my build im looking forward to getting my tank stocked

What is the alkalinity of the calcium reactor's effluent (or output)?
  11. Djm's Avatar
I finallly got the shipment... Everything was acclimated for at least an hour or so... Seems to be working out awesome... Got the alk up to 6.7-7.0 dKH i just dialed the cal reactor way back and disconnected the sulful reactor alltogether... And cleaned the reactor chamber. Will playwith it at a later date... That was the issue... Sulfur dosing it was drawing way too much alk from the tank. I will continue to add the kh buffer... Otherwise the liveaquaria.com purchase was awesome... So far so good.

    2 cleaner shrimp
    5 chromis
    1 yellow tang
    1 blue hippo
    1 powder blue
    1 blonde naso
    2 true percs.
    2 diamond gobies
All healthy and even started to eat!!

That's good news. What size tank is this?
  13. Djm's Avatar
Tank size is a 24 gallon nano.... Hahaha had to crack a lame joke. It is a 220.
Funny part is that the effluent on the cal reactor is off the charts. Too high to register.
  14. melev's Avatar
Yes, that is why I asked you. It should measure around 29 to 35 dKH. You have to keep adding drops until you get the final number.

Can you put that many tangs in the same tank I though that they would fight

No prob at all. Actually bought 3 more since... Live aquaria fish looks pristine! Better than one of thenbetter lfs i go to. Ish getting along great.
