This morning I went to my tank in hopes of planning where to place all my new sps frags (about 12 coming in tomorrow). Just as I was feeling great about my great polyp extension on my hulk acro I realized I was down one fish, I went to the other side of the tank to see my purple fire fish on its side on the sand bed gasping for air

The only new additions to the tank have been a deeper sand bed about 2 weeks ago (no I didn’t cycle the tank), 2 small peppermint shrimp added a week ago, changed my carbon and added a little GFO on friday

Yesterday I did a 6gallon water change, with reef crystals rather than my usual instant ocean. As per every night I dosed my amino and carbs and did a feeding of brine

The other fish look fine...this is baffling, I have had my firefish about a year now and acquired them quite large compared to the tiny other ones in the store so im thinking perhaps it could be just age


is there anything i can do? i think not??

    You could add an airstone for the time being to help oxygenate the water, or move it to a QT system with an airstone in case something in the water is hurting your fish. Carbon dust and GFO fines can be hard on their gills, which is why rinsing is critical.

    well i just came home from work to find him dead and being eaten by my nassarius snails, hes almost all gone so im thinking ill just let them finish him off. all my other fish are still fine, i did some quick water tests and everything appears okay, so im not too worried but still concerned

    i like to do a waterchange when i add new carbon or gfo, when removing water from the tank i let it pass through the reactor rinsing all the new media removing fines and dust
