RAP - Day 1

Rate this Entry
A few images from Reefapalooza for y'all. Attendance was strong today, which is always good for the vendors.

This new reactor from Aquamaxx keeps the biopellets spinning in rotation. Not tumbling, more like orbit. I'm going to have to try this one out myself.

Curt from Neptune Systems was answering questions.

One of the demos today. This one was about coral fragging. Another was how to drill holes in a glass tank.

Jon Warner showcased some of his product line, and I finally got some Ecobak NP pellets to try out.

Karen Talbot was painting an item which I think goes into the Sunday raffle.

Real Reef rock comes in really big pieces now! Look at this beast of a shelf rock. It's gonna have to be for big aquarium keepers.

The robot made an appearance today, and he was quite the crowd pleaser.

Jessy liked this tank.

While I thought this was interesting. Just flow, no filtration.

The show is going well. The weather cooperated nicely and everyone seemed to have a good time. I got to meet a few of your reef addicts in person which is always fun. Looking forward to more tomorrow.

How much are the new Aquamaxx reactors and what are they rated at?

I'll ask what the price is tomorrow. I know they have a larger reactor. Here's a picture of the internal base that creates that circular flow. I also shot a 15 second video to show you guys later.

I saw those at RAP on Saturday. They are awesome ! The way the bio-pellets swirl around the reactor is really cool. Great design.

There was 2 sizes one was for tanks up to 150 gallon. and the larger was 150-300 gallon. the smaller one had an MSRP of $65, I don't remember what the other went for.

They told me that Marine Depot carries them. After Marc told me about it, I had to get one myself.

I am going to have to get two or three of them.

Wait until Marc uploads the video, it's awesome.

I purchased an Aquamax reactor about a month ago.For the price it seems to work pretty good.As with all these pellet reactors you have to put some serious flow through them. If the flow is not strong enough the pellets become "sticky" and start clumping.

I attended a club meeting over a year ago, where the speaker was Jon Warner of Warner Marine. He stated that the flow should be very gentle, just enough to keep the flow even through the pellets. He said if the flow is to hard it would grind the the pellets down. You would be wearing them down, instead of being consumed by the bacteria.

I heard the same pitch,I don't know if you are using a reactor, if not try it, the material sticks or clumps with low flow.I tried slowing down the flow with the Aquamax with the same result. From what I can see the media is not wearing down that fast,if at all.I will attempt to measure how fast it wears out.

I am curious what they had to say about drilling holes in glass tanks as I have been told several times that aquariums over 20 gal. the glass has been tempered and you can not drill it?
