icecap out of business???

Rate this Entry
So to make a long story short I have a Odyssea POS 250W MH fixture (with four 65W PC's) that I can no longer get MH bulbs for unless I replace the ballasts. In doing some hunting around online I found that the Icecap 250W ballasts would work. But I have not been able to find anyone with them in stock. I just now read that icecap went out of business. Is that true? Anyone have any ideas on other ballasts that I could use?

I was so close last night to pulling the trigger on two DIY LED setups from reefledlighs.com. But I just couldn't bring myself to do it. My plan is to go full LED but I would like to wait until I move my reef from the 90 to the in wall 180. But that won't happen for at least 1 more year.

My tank is a mixed reef with softies, LPS, SPS, and a clam.

From what I understand, CoralVue bought out Icecap, at least in part. I know the Icecap 660/440 ballasts were re-branded as CoralVue. I'm not sure if that also applies to the metal halide ballasts as well.

Is it possible these CoralVue ballasts are the same as the Icecap varieties? I never personally used metal halide, so I can't be sure.

I've never known MH ballasts to be proprietary.

After doing a little more research on this fixture I have decided to not put any money into it and go with LED's. LED's is where I really want to be for lighting on my tank so it really doesnt make much sense to put 4 or 5 hundred dollars in to this fixture replacing ballast's and retrofitting it with VHO's or T5's and buying new bulbs.

Once I get the LED DIY kits put together I will do a write up on them.
