Help with Cyano

Rate this Entry
Hey guys,

I thought I would ask for a hand on my battles with cyano. First some background. I have had my 90 AGA tank for 4 years and recently restarted the tank in Feb 2013 due to Bryopsis.

Total water volume is around 130 gallons, basement sump, Octopus NWB 150, BRS reactor with carbon, TLF Phosban 550 with BRS biopellets. I dose 3 vials each of Prodbio Biodigest and Bioptim every 2 weeks. I have around 100 lbs of marco rock. As for sand I have Tropic Eden Reefflakes. So the system was started completely dry with zero live rock and zero live sand.

SG 1.024
MG 1100
CA 410
Phos .03
No3 20
TDS 0

I only have 3 fish in my tank, corals all look healthy just can't shake the cyano. I do regular water changes every week @ 15 gallons. I blow off the rocks with a baster and try to suck out as much as I can. I feed once per day with frozen mysis. I've never been able to drop my NO3. I am thinking of starting GFO or dosing chemi clean or something like that as a last resort.

I am contemplating buying actual live rock from LiveAquaria to see if that helps. It can't be flow as I have 2 MP40W's in the aquarium. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I would mix some water in preparation of using chemiclean. It really is painless if you follow the directions. I have used it twice before.

My tank went through an algae cycle a few months back,it was not pleasant almost made me throw in the towel.Anyway I was left with a Cyano problem.I have been using Dr Tims Waste Away and it has been working like a charm.

I just recently treated my tank with RedCyano Rx and got rid of the stuff. I blogged about it too.

Yes I sure did. Well a bit of an update is in order. Over the holidays I dosed ChemiClean. All the cyano after 48hrs and 25% water change was done. Hopefully I can correct my problem and be on the way.

One thing that I've learned in this hobby over the years is, something's always around the corner.
