42 Gallon Hex build

Rate this Entry
The first two photos are the parts of the sides to the back cover. The third photo is of the parts to the back of the back cover. This has been changed since the photo. It now has a solid back. I was going to put a panel in and decided that would not work water from spills that would get in the panel slots of the rails and stiles. I figured that would not be good in the long run and changed it. I don't have a photo of the parts for the back after the change. The forth photo is of the sides and back of the back cover assembled. To the right of these assemblies is the two assembled doors for the back cover. It is not the easiest thing to get the back cover off. The doors are for access to the inside of the cover without having to remove the cover. I will continue with the back cover on the next post.

I thought everyone might like a sneak peak at how this may turn out. The last three photos are of the canopy, stand, tank and back cover partially assembled during a test fit. These photos were taken before most of the other photos I have posted. This was moved to the garage and filled with DI water. It ran for a month as a test before it was dismantled. Then reassembly, sanding, staining and painting was started. Most of the photos of this disassembled were taken during the dissassembly process including the ones at the first of the blog that are taken of the stacks of wood. The testing gave me a chance to make sure that everything was working out as far as access and ease of maintenance. These photos were taken before I made the sump so a 10 gallon tank was in the photo. It was made following Melev's directions on his website. It was used in the testing though. Thank's for the informative how to Melev. Don't worry this is not finished yet. I still have a lot to do.

Thanks gettareef. I do have to pace myself to make sure I don't rush things. I also have a 110 gallon I want to build a stand and canopy for. This is a test run of sorts to see what works and what dosen't before starting it. It is cheaper to try out my ideas on the smaller tank. I also figured that if I can do the stand and canopy for a hex tank the rectangular one should be no problem. I will have more room under the stand on the 110. That is a big issue on the hex tank. There is little room for the equipment.
