Playing with my new camera (Nikon D90)

Rate this Entry
While I was at MAX last weekend, I picked up a new camera. It's a Nikon D90 with a very nice Nikon 105mm Macro lens.

These were freehand shots, some taken from across the room and some standing in front of the tank. I just wanted to get a feel for the camera, which is quite the upgrade from my D70s.

First of all, here's my newest pet.

And now for the reef.

Green Slimer (A. yongei)

A. plana, glowing under actinic and Radium lighting

Platygyra pini, one of my oldest corals.

T. maxima

Cleaner shrimp

Acanthastrea echinata

Chalice

Pavona sp. growing up the overflow wall

Four corals in a single shot

A. abrolhensis from pwhitby's reef

This female psychedelic mandarin's face was the only thing lit up in this shot. I wish I'd gotten it 1/10th of a second sooner before the acro's branch obscured it slightly.

Some polyps on the Slimer.

Dang Marc, didn't think your photography could get any better

Kudo's on the new pet! can I bring my Malamute over to play? She loves playing with snowshoe hares.

You might make my bunny a tad nervous.

I still have to get more familiar with the camera's features. Fortunately, Jessy and a few others I know have this exact model so I can ask them questions to speed up the learning curve. I do want to add that very little was done in Photoshop to clean up most of those. A slight adjustment in levels was needed in a few. And there were a lot of goofs that I didn't share.

Marc those pictures are freaking sweet! Thanks for the D90 demo! I'm going to be looking for a new DLSR myself soon. Also good luck with the bunny! My girlfriend used to keep rabbits...

My D70s is going up for sale. I need to take a few pictures of the gear and put it on DFWMAS and Craigslist.

Nice shots Marc! I would love to have the 105mm Macro lens! I have been wishing for years now with no luck.

Thanks Gabriel. This one literally fell into my lap. Jessy was doing all she could to weasel in, but if I was going to buy the upgrade, it was going to include the lens. Otherwise, what's the point?

    Nice shots Marc.
Have you noticed any obvious image quality differences between the D70 and 90?
I know the photo sensor is one of the more notable differences between the two...

Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to borrow other people's D90s to take some pictures. And if they had a really nice lens, it made all the difference in the world. For example, taking pictures of fish is much easier - and I'm talking about taking pictures without the flash. The images are less grainy, which is a big deal to me. I'd have to look up the difference on DPreview.com to get more specific, which I've not done yet.
