Blue sparkles/lights in sump when adding RO

Rate this Entry
I should have made my first ever post something better but this was pretty cool. Tonight when I added the topoff water to my sump the were a few at first, then tons, then tapered back off, of blue lights/sparkles everywhere. Has anyone noticed this before?

I am going to set my video camera up tonight and see if I can capture it. It only lasted for about 10-15 sec total and the "lightning bug effect" was only 3-4 seconds. This was the first time I saw it but I typically don't have all the lights off when adding water. My luck it was a one time thing never to be duplicated!

Ive never heard of it in a reef tank before but would almost guarantee this is what happened. I used to see it all the time when I worked on the ocean. Always when the ship would brake the water creating alot of surface turbulance.

BTW, this is a pretty cool first post, but without video, it can never be totally amazing.

Better get the video camera ready in case it happens again.

Ive seen the same thing Trido saw, although when I saw it, it was from the other side of the waterline while night diving.

Yeah, it does sound cool, but the first time it happens, the first thought that goes through your mind is...

    "Im narcing out".

Well, good news and bad news. I was able to get it to happen again tonight. Less from pouring in water but more from swishing the handle of a scraper in the water. Bad news is it doesn't seem to show up on video. Will download and examine it full size tomorrow but maybe they are too fast and not bright enough. I do believe it is related to the unidentified small white deposits on all hard surfaces in my sump. They are calcium like deposits that remind me of coco worm shells but do not grow. Only about 1-2mm dia.

Bioluminescent Barnacles?!? We could have a new character for Sponge-Bob!

Is your video tape, or digital? Ill loan you my Digital, it has a night mode that might catch it.
