I am excited about this new site! I have been a big fan of Marc's work both on Melevs reef and reefcast! I have been keeping saltwater tanks for about 4 years now. I have gone through periods of great enthusiasm and then periods where I am pulled in another direction. Right now is one of those times where I can't focus on my tanks as much as I would like. Working full time, going to grad school and expecting my first born has taken a lot of time away from my saltwater love. HOWEVER, I can never break myself away from this hobby.

Stats on the tank :
65 gallon
40 Gallon Ref
Return Pump: Quiet One 4000
Skimmer : DIY Skimmer made by meeee!!!
Powerheads: Just bought a vortech MP20- No pictures yet.
Lights: 400 Watt MH SE CoralVue - I enjoy a well cooked piece of coral

I also run carbon and use two part for calcium.



1 year into the tank. Attempting the first pvc Tower

I liked the tower so much I did it again.



The tank with the towers now. This tank needs some TLC. I have not been able to focus on my tank now that I am working full time and getting my MBA at The Ohio State University........GO BUCKS!

My Mangroves have grown right out of the tank? Does that mean my nutrients are high?? LOL

    Thanks mhowe9 - If I could do it over again I would cement pieces of rubble over the entire frame of the structure. Oh well, that is what makes this hobby great, the ability to learn from mistakes.

    The PVC towers work out well. Are you gluing the frag disks to the pillars, or are you using magnets?

    I like how the mangroves have room to grow vertically. With the stand open like that, they aren't stunted and you can raise the lighting as needed. Good idea!

    Love that pink Pocillopora colony. That was one of the first SPS corals I ever bought.

    The discs are easily super glued to the towers under water. When I started putting the towers in I really wanted to add a sense of drama to the tank. I think adding some dramatic verticals lines did the trick.

    You know when I get a house I would love to plumb my tank to the basement. I would love to have a display mangrove tank in the basement with a light rack that can be lowered and raised to continue the growth. I am starting to get nervous that the roots of these mangroves will rip through the seems of my ref. . . . Yikes!

    I think it would take a few years for that to happen, based on the mangroves I've kept and observed. No need to worry yet.

    I completely agree. The more you learn the more you want to change things. Definately one of things that makes this hobby great.

    I recently bought a vortech Mp20. I must say that I love it! I decided to take a video focusing on the GSP in my tank to show the wave motion in the tank. Please ignore the hair algae. I am working on it!

    Thanks Snakebyt! Tonight I was inspired. I took some different zoa colonies from around the tank and fragged them on to acrylic disks that I made. I then glued these disked to the right tower. Once the zoas begin to spread I will update this blog with those pictures.

    I am digging the mangrove fuge area. Did you purposely make the stand bigger for the mangroves?

    YES Sir. I made it open in the back and bigger so that the mangroves will grow. I have had to move the light slowly up the tank.
