120 Build Fresh Water test with Fuge, Weir box and return pump all working...

Rate this Entry
So, Here's to asking the Million Dollar Question..... How does one balance the entire setup to eliminate the slurping sound the Weir box Makes...

In recap, 120 Gallon tank, the Sump is modeled after a Model F from marc's designs out of a 29 gallon aquarium (overflow splits to 2 sections, 1st being where the skimmer will sit and the 3rd section where the fuge is.) BTW, the Ball valve is located above the fuge....I could leave this one open and cut in a new Ball valve right over the entry into the Skimmer Section. Lastly, I built an 8 inch weir box and plumbed the return with a 1 inch bulkhead and associated pvc pipe. The return pump currently is a Rio 1400 and I expect to move to a larger pump like a 2500 rio or a mag 9.5 within the next month....

Does everyone have a slurping sound from their Weir/Overflow box? Do I need to change the plumbing out to 3/4 inch to the sump and fuge???And the Tank Water level is Just at the top of the teeth of the Weir box. Would a Smaller Weir box ( 7 inch width) make a difference?

Any ideas??? Anyone??? Or should I leave well enough alone until it's saltwater, I know that saltwater has a greater density than fresh water, will that make a difference?

Below are some photos: I raised the inverted U section of the Weir Box, this with the Strainer vertical, reduced the sound somewhat.... Yesterday, I had a 90 degree Elbow with the strainer and that was worse....

Thanks,

Aaron

How are you venting trapped air in the weir box ?

Freshwater is noisier than saltwater, and during the first 14 days of saltwater it will still be a little noisy until the plumbing slimes over.

Your strainer isn't going to help with noise, but it will keep fish or snails out of the sump. I would insert eggcrate inside the inner section of the weir instead to keep them out in the first place.

What you'll want to do is use an elbow and some rigid tubing to vent the drain pipe. This makes it run quietly.

The rigid tubing has a small piece (1/2" or so) of flexible tubing slide down the correct point to keep the rigid from fallling down the drain. It's a holding collar. You'll have to lift and lower the rigid tubing to find the perfect spot, but it tends to be about 3" down. Once a month, remove this tubing to clean off the end because it will clog up with salt -- the drain will start to slurp indicating this problem. Soak that end in vinegar, then clean it out with something (wire, toothpick, drill bit) and re-position as before.

Don't use Rio pumps. The Mag 9.5 will probably be too much flow for the 1" drain in that overflow box, but if you installed a second bulkhead it could probably handle it. You could use a Mag 7 with 1" plumbing instead.
