Spawning event?

Rate this Entry
We got home from dinner tonight and found the tank full of small particles and a haze. They are dark green, about the size of a 'normal' freckle, and dissolve/smoosh without feeling them smoosh in your fingers.

I did a water change today(the first in a few months...I know). Inhabitants now consist of 2 clowns, 1 sailfin tang, 1 green chromis, 3 clams, zoas, ricordea, GSP, 2 BTA, 1 cleaner shrimp, various snails(who have been egg laying), a few emerald crabs, some Anthelia, fuge with caulerpa/cheato, and a few thousand bristle worms. I did not notice if the shrimp was holding or not.

The fish seem to be eating the particles, somewhat. All seems to be ok since then, which was an hour or so ago now.

Thoughts?

(I posted this on my local forum and *the evil empire* too for those who browse...the more the merrier right?!)

I would think it was caulerpa fluid. Do you have any plants that appear to have turned clear?

The macro is all green and doesn't show the hairy appearance shown in the reefkeeping mag article.

I've had Caulerpa nummularia bleed out the green globules of fluid before my eyes, without the hairy appearance. If that isn't what you've seen, I don't know what else it could be. Be sure to update us when you figure it out.

    Pictures would help.

Didnt get any good shots of it unfortunately.

Someone on RC suggested they were BTA eggs.

From some quick research, I do believe they were BTA eggs.

I've had BTA eggs in the past, and they were very small. I posted up a blog about them. Does this look like what you saw?

Yes and no. The size is about correct, but when we got home they were just flying around the system so I don't know if they were in a mass like that to begin with.
