Another customized sump

Rate this Entry
This sump was a new design I came up with. To fit the stand, its footprint had to be 60 x 24 which left space for an external Dart pump.

Here's my sketch. Note the way the water has to travel through the sump and finally exit. It has the option to run filter socks or use the bubble tower.

My customer decided to send me his Deltec skimmer to make sure it would fit. This sump was quite heavy, made with 3/8" Acrylite GP and shipped on a pallet.

The water exits the skimmer zone and travels through a 2" wide channel into the return zone.

These descriptions may help.

I realize this one is a little confusing, but it's the best I can come up with since it isn't an animated gif. My goal was to make sure the full length of the sump was all return zone so it wouldn't run dry too quickly. The linear run of 60" prevents microbubbles from entering the return pump, and leaves space for reactors, heaters, probes, top off, dosing, and anything else one might want to place in there.

Sweet looking sump. Hey Marc, you think you could make a hang on the side sock holder. I would like to be able to run a sock when doing glass cleaning and such. However, my acrylic weld jobs still leave much to be desired.

I think sexy is the right term for this. Makes me wish you were closer so you could build my sump.

Marc, are there any calculations or formulas tables that tank and sump builders use before sump/tank designs are approved and built ? Example, this sump is 60" long ... should I use 2" or 3" euro bracing ? Does it need to be thicker or can it be thinner without bowing ?

Water height is the determining factor on thickness and bracing that is needed

ditto, looks great. i'd be interested in a hang on sock holder also when i set up my new 180 gal tank. also i might need a protein skimmer stand. it's to bad your not closer for the sump build, you do some beatiful acrylic work. keep it up marc.

OK .. So a sump is basically stronger due to all the compartments and different water levels of those compartments.

Nice job Marc. I really like those sock holders. Have you given any thought to building removable overflow combs? I think it would be a nice touch, and to have an extra set, so your customer can swap combs.

marc, how do your holders holdprobes? have you seen the new Eshopps magnetic probe holders? they use a 3/8 acrylic or 1/2 acrylic for a holder, and then they drill and tap for 1/4 thumb screws. that way you can run probes, or 1/4 tubing for dosers. but the thumb screws will allow you to adjust your probe height, or just slide the magnets up and down.

for you, youwont need the magnets, but the thumb screws for holding the probes is a sweet idea that you might look into.

i hope your customer posts some pictures of their tank adn the new sump in action!

very nice set-up marc! please excuse my ignorance but how is the water being supplied to the refugium? is there another supply coming from the tank? if so, how do you keep the refugium flow nice & easy? thanks. Gerry

The plumbing is set up so that 75% of the water drains into the skimmer section and 25% into the refugium. The pipe is set up to drain in the corner of the refugium that is catty-corner to the teeth area, with the fitting half-exposed and half-submerged so that water tumbles out while air breathes out of quietly.

So are there 2 overflows for this setup...one to each sock? What is the tower used for then?

The bubble tower is for the day to day needs, and the sock holders will be for those special days when stuff really gets stirred up.

    Mark,
regarding sumps in general. Let say I want to build a 42"x19" sump that is 16" high with 10" baffles. I guess I need to use 3/8 acrylic, but can I safely use 1/4" acrylic for bottom and top brace parts?
    Thanks,
    Oleg

For that sized sump, you could use 1/4" for the entire project. If you prefer 3/8" and want to use 1/4" for the top and bottom, that's fine.
