Fire and Rain

Rate this Entry
My neighbor showed up pounding on my front door while I was busy measuring PAR in the fishroom. Turns out a small fire ignited on the transformer behind my house. And it's raining!

I went ahead and powered down the tank, pulled out the generator and plugged in the tank, my tv and my PC. The fire department left and Oncor is coming out to deal with it. I don't know how long I'll be without power, so I lowered the A/C a few more degrees to keep the house comfortable for me and my bunny.

So exactly how many kilowatts are you pulling from that transformer to start it on fire Marc?

    LOL - I wasn't doing anything I swear!

Within 40 minutes of seeing the fire, the fire department came and left, and a guy from Oncor Power came to take a look. Since we all still had power, he decided to write up a ticket and have someone else come out tomorrow. I told him it is going to rain tomorrow as well, but he still decided he didn't want to deal with it tonight.

Seems as though public safety should prevail over procrastination? Got to love utility workers.

i work for hydro one up here in canada. i'm a carpenter so i don't deal with the juice but we do get called out a fair bit. alot of times they have to replace transformers in some pretty bad weather, but if it's still working they will leave it. we had one last year that caught on fire 3 weeks in a row before they would allow us to replace it. i don't know what the reasoning is but it must be the cost.
