The aftermath

Rate this Entry
Since the spawning event last weekend, my tank has been in recovery mode. The pink hammer coral is in the worst shape and I'm not sure about its survival. I've had it since it was a three headed frag more than 7 years ago. Here's what it's been looking like lately.

The Rose BTA has turned Rose. It was much deeper red until the spawning event and it seems to be getting lighter every day.

Phosphates rose significantly (over .25ppm) after all the sperm and eggs were dumped into the system, and may have also come from the dying cyano. I treated yesterday with Phosphate Control, dripping 10 drops into my skimmer every 20 minutes all day long. This kept the display from clouding up as the Phosphate was exported into the collection cup. I had just enough to knock them back to 0.

I added three Mexican Turbo snails and a new red Serpent Starfish to my reef.

I'm working on a couple of automation projects for my tank, which will be discussed in detail soon.

Sorry your hammer is taking a nose dive..Yeah it doesn't look like that will pull through but there is always hope if there is any flesh left. And I'm in awe of the amount of projects you tinker with on any given day....you sir are my hero.

Marc, I've never had a hammer, but my frog spawn and open brain have recovered before when I thought them gone for certain. Hope they come back soon.

And a have a few good guesses on your up-coming projects. I think I'll be duplicating one of them soon myself.

Was the phosphate control the stuff that I had written a post about or stuff that you have used in the past? Just curious

BTW, Everything looks good in there.

It is called Phosphate Control, sold by Blue Life USA. They had to rename most of their products for legal reasons, so odds are it is presently being sold as Phosphate RX by now.

Sorry to hear about the hammer.
Did yo ualready make big water changes and add any carbon to deal with this or will yo ulet the tank process it?

Now that I'm home, I can finally answer your question, Phil. The hammer is beginning to open up again. Of course with the tissue almost gone from each 'trunk' (or branch), I'm still unsure how this will play out, but the heads are actually out in the flow again.

Maroun, the spawning event was on Saturday night. On Sunday night, I did a 55g water change, fired up the skimmer and ran carbon. I'm going to change the carbon tonight, as I didn't have time prior to my trip to Philadelphia.

It's always something, right? Well, the hammer is perking up.

But now a patch of white appeared on the Orange Blob.

I guess the coral knows I won't frag it, so it is going to take matters into its own polyps.
