lighting upgrade

I have 4 T5 10000K and 2 T5 actinic on my 40 breeder. I have stonies and softies. I can get 2 250w aqua medic MH, they have these flaps on them that seem to be legs. Can I rest them on the glass? I have a canopy with 2 computer fans( shout out to fry's). Would one 250 MH be sufficient? Was gonna try to keep my actinic, probably a T8, though. Could I burn my corals?

aqua medic has made many lights over the years so im not quite sure what you mean by the flaps that look like legs

however keep in mind that if you go with one mh lamp over a tank 36" in length your going to want to have it high enough off the water so that the intire tank in getting light, if not you will get a spotlight effect

as for burning your coral, as long as you slowly increase the intensity of the light you will be okay, you can use layers of window screemn, shorten the photo period and raise or lower the lighting

I think one 250 MH would be sufficient for most people, if it is high enough from the tank to get the coverage as baker.shawn stated. Is 6 T5 bulbs on a 40 breeder not enough light? To me, that sounds like a huge amount of light and should be able to grow just about anything assuming you have decent individual reflectors. Are you not getting the growth you need, and feel light is the root cause?
