water parameters

Rate this Entry
So I finally got me a alk test from Selifert. I tested all the parameters I have test kits for. Here is what I got:

SG 1.25
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate >5ppm
Calcium 300ppm
alk <14 dkh
Magnesium No test kit yet

So I did a water change of about 15% hoping this will help drop the alk a bit. I have been using a Kent Marine two part for two weeks. However, I just got the alk test so I probably should have just been dosing the part A. I am going to retest the Calcium and alkilinity to day since the tank has settled from the water change.

Next week I am thinking of buying the Bulk Reef Supply two part with Magnesium. This is a bit cheaper than the the gallon jugs of the Kent Marine that my LFS sells. I just wanted to see if anyone has any comment positive or negative about the BRS Two part. Another question is it all right to dose it all at once in the morning or should you really dose it throughout the day?

Tests this morning show that alkalinity is down to 13.8 DKH and calcium is at 320ppm. So for the next two days I guess I am going to just dose part A and test nightly to see where I am at.

Once you get your Ca and Alk to where you want them remember its important to dose evenly. Ca and Alk have a mutal relationship. Also, if your Mg is low your going to have a tough time maintaining those parameters so Mg is just as important to dose as the other two, although you have to dose it much less frequently.
