Finally, inspiration strikes

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
My angled tank is turning three next month. And I've been contemplating a new tank in that spot. I came up with an idea today, which I think will be amazing. Hopefully I can build it in the next couple of weeks. I know you guys want all the details, but I'd prefer to reveal it once completed. It'll be a little bit bigger, it'll have a nifty way of looking at it, and it'll incorporate a Vortech MP10 internally. I'm stoked!

Here's an older image of the tank in question.

Can’t wait to see another Melev creation – although telling us you have had an amazing idea and then making us wait for details is just taunting us.

Hey now, put a pic of the tank and the area so we can at least try to imagine what you'll do! ;-p

I talked with a local DFWMAS member about building this one out of glass, which would allow me to document the construction process for a future article here on Reef Addicts. I'd like it to be glass so I can clean it more easily. The coralline growth on the acrylic has been a pain, and this tank has its share of scratches.

This will be awesome to see when done!
This idea of "nifty viewing" has got me thinking.

Why would you ever want to replace such a sexy tank as your angled one? Who will be the lucky recipient of the famous angled tank once retired?
  11. melev's Avatar
Because I've been looking at it for three years and I want a newer younger model now.

I think this new idea might be something different. I'm getting a bid on the glass pricing soon.

BTW what do you mean by "and it'll incorporate a Vortech MP10 internally."

    That's part of the surprise.

As opposed to a vortec externally?
Can't wait to see what cool idea you've come up with this time Marc, the angled tank has certainly been a treat to follow. But won't your table saw disown you for using glass this time? It just seems so odd to hear you working with anything but Acrylic.

Frankly, I'd like to try my hand at glass and silicone for once. If the person I contacted has the time (which he's warned me he doesn't), I won't have to worry about a flood on my hands. Yes, this one would put the motor inside the tank instead of externally. That's the plan anyway.

Glass really shouldn't bee too hard to work with. If you are going to make a fairly small tank I would make a small wood frame to temporarily hold the sections that are being put together in place. So a square that the bottom piece could sit in and then lay a small bead of silicone along the edges and then place the back sides and front into place in that order with another premade frame that will help hold everything in place. Use a shim to make sure everything is held in place until it all cures then smmoth your silicone beads down. After it cures remove shims and remove the frames. If you are making a slant one like before you would just have to lay a bead on the slanted piece and then set in place and hold with a few pieces of painters tape. Smooth your beads again and then eurobrace the top. If you make the frames like that recreating the design should be very easy.

As you can imagine, this idea is going to be tabled indefinitely.
