My Three Year Addiction

Rate this Entry
I have been in the saltwater reefing hobby now for 3+ years, and if I would have gave up at the first sign of trouble I would not be here today. Every day I see so many new and old reefers leaving this hobby. Problems develop in our tanks and they frustrating and very depressing. Not to mention the very bad economy that we find ourselves in these days. IMO, in the end this is a wonderful hobby. I'm still learning so much every day from everyone in this hobby. I hope in turn to return the favor.

My three year journey started with a few trips to a few LFS in my area. Getting good advise was scarce to say the least. They can smell a noobie coming a mile away, and see their opportunity to unload old outdated equipment. That old saying still holds true, "let the buyer beware". So do your research. That's why sites like this one are so important. It gives people just starting out a place to get advise from people that have been through the headaches, so they don't have to, over and over again.

OK enough said, now for the pictures.

Wow, look at all the pictures! It's neat to see how your tank evolved over time. Tell us the details now, tank size, lighting, equipment, maintenance... You've got some very nice coral colonies now. And what happened with the mini-crash? It looks like it recovered nicely only a month later.

Wow! Great blog write up! I love looking at pictures over time. Maybe this is something we should make an informal request for the rest of our members. Thanks for sharing!! Great tank.

    Thanks Marc & Jessy.

    Tank details:
    65 gal. Glass Bow-Front w/round corners, 10 gal sump, 10 gal fuge, 2x250 watt 12K or 14k DE's on CV ballast's w/ LumenMax 3's, OctoExtreme 160 P/S, (1) VorTech MP40w (buying a 10mp this Friday).

Fish: Two Maroon Clowns, Yellow Tang, Purple Tang, Yellow Clown goby and a Arabian Pseudochromis.

Maintenance: 10% weekly water change with daily dosing of additives. This is a NeoZeo system running tank with no reactor.

As for the mini-crash. I had a 12" ritteri anemone that deiced to go free floating into my vortech pump. This was while I was light adjusting my coral with multi-able window screen covering the top of the tank. The anemone was looking for more brighter light.

In the mini-crash I lost all my fish except my breeding pair of maroon clownfish. This was a very sad day for me last month. I lost my last breeding pair of banggai cardinals and their five babies.

That's a terrible sight. I've had the same, back in 2005 with a different set of circumstances.

I can't see the Arabian Pseudochromis in your pictures. Do you have a photo of it?

He's very hard to get a photo of ... Especially for my P&S camera skills.

He's very bright orange, not like in my bad photos.

Also it looks like my clowns have a new clutch of eggs. First one in months. Too bad I don't have any rots.

Call Tal, he'll hook you up. He's the biggest breeder on this site.

I know I'm bloging a little late on this tread but I try and go to everyones blob to check out their tanks. Wow is a good response about ya tank. Was nice to see the progresion of the tank. The red monti and them zoo's, bottom left! They grew like crazy, right over that rock in front of them. All I can say is awesome!

    Thanks for your comments.
Those zoo's grow like weeds. I try to introduce different types and colored zoo's, but the old ones just out grow them. LOL

Update: Corals continue to get better after the mini-crash. Starting to see new growth tips in most of my sps's again.
