  1. Yeah, the big thing that prevents me from posting is that I really am awful at tank photography and I want to post pics when I blog. The tank is ok, I just discovered that my coral hasn't been growing well because of extremely low alkalinity. My calcium has been over 500 for a long long time but I had no growth. That should've been a clue that the alk was off. I'm getting it corrected and hopefully they will start growing. I just sold my first frags out of the frag tank too. Unfortunately I have red flatworms in the frag tank, but they haven't spread out to the sump or DT so that's good. My new little sixline in the frag tank loves them though! I'll try to take pics soon and post another update.

Wow, sorry to hear all the bad news. ;-( Did most of the algae go away? The biopeellets,, is that the stuff that replaces vodka? But, I'm glad you are still enjoying your tank no matter what seems to get in ya way. ;-)

Hey Mits, how's the new setup doing? Man, you really did a great job on the whole DT and frag tank setups. ;-)

Clown eggs!

by Mits on 08-13-2011 at 07:00 PM
I have had my perc and ocellaris clowns together for about 3 years now and they've nearly always stayed around each other but never acted like a mated pair. Well, I just looked between the two rose anemones that they live in and there is a clutch of eggs stuck to a rock. Would it be worth it to get my extra 10 gal tank out, add the little filter and throw the rock in there? I know the dietary requirements are tough for the fry but I think I can keep up with their needs with my awesome local club

Very sad. LM Blenny on his way out.

by Mits on 08-06-2011 at 07:07 PM
Have you ever watched one of your fish slowly waste away and there was nothing you could do about it? That's happening to our lawnmower blenny, who is our system's oldest fish. He is one of only two fish, along with a clown, who has been there through all three tanks over the past 4 or 5 years. He's always been extremely active, constantly eating, and very outgoing. His belly has been full sized his whole life. Last week I looked in the tank and he's suddenly skin and bones, like his stomach

Should I treat my hippo tang?

by Mits on 07-06-2011 at 01:54 PM
I have a small (3 in. or so) hippo tang that I've had since around Thanksgiving who has been very active and healthy, but he seems to get small outbreaks of ich that go away by themselves. Last week he was pretty bad, and in the time I got the stuff together for a treatment tank he got better. Last night he had several spots on his head, including one pretty big one, and on a couple fins. Today I can't find a single spot. Should I treat him for it or is that something that will just come and

Lumenbright Mini upgrade worth it?

by Mits on 06-15-2011 at 12:30 AM
I want a lighting upgrade and was thinking of starting toward a DIY LED setup, but it may be a while until I can afford to put it together and I think that new items and ideas are going so fast that I'd be better served to let it play out a little more. I'm currently running 2x250w MH SE bulbs with parabolic spider reflectors and I can get a couple Lumenbright minis for about $88 each. I know it would focus a lot more light into the tank and I'd need to acclimate, but will it increase heat or

Copepod question

by Mits on 06-02-2011 at 12:28 AM
I have tons of copepods in my refugium, it's to the point that there are little clouds of them swarming all over the place. It's pretty amazing, I can just stare at them and all of the other stuff in there as much as the display tank. I just don't see them in the display. I'm trying to figure out if they are numerous enough to add a mandarin. The tank was upgraded from a 2 year old 55 to the current 120 last summer, and the only other place I've seen copepods as dense as mine is at Inland Aquatics.
