  1. Just two more weeks...

That famous line from the appropriately named "The Money Pit" movie comes to mind.

But after MACNA, I'll be getting my 400g back into the house at last. Here are some pictures from the water test that I received today.

  2. Got back from Comic Con...

Last weekend, I attended San Diego's Comic Con (Thursday to Sunday). I had a great time, and during my time away, a friend watched the reef to make sure all was well. There was a power outage on Friday night, and the Apex notified me via text and email, but never informed me if power was restored. I didn't really feel comfortable contacting my friend at 2 a.m. his time, so I wrote him the next morning to let him know and have him give me an update. He stopped by and reported all was fine. Whew. ...

  3. Sudden storm, and then powerless for half a day

It's been a busy week for me as I prepare for my upcoming trips, care for customer orders, club business, and more. Yesterday afternoon, my area was hit with a 'microburst' storm. I saw a few raindrops on my windshield as I was heading home, and maybe 30 minutes later it was crazy outside. The wind was huge, the trees' branches were swaying hard, there was white mist going every direction, then pea-sized hail came down for a few minutes. It rained really hard and fast, and the storm then passed, ...

  4. I pulled out the 50mm lens

Should that be a 5cm lens? Anyway, the 50mm lens has a very tight f/stop and thus can be great for taking pictures of fish because the shutter speed is greater. That being said, it doesn't guarantee success. I took about 80 pictures yesterday and only liked about 15. Normally if I shoot 80 pictures, 75 are serious contenders for sharing. Here are the ones I liked of three subjects: Spock my Naso tang; the male Lyretail Anthias; and the Flame Angel.

  5. Lobophyllia changes shape.

I've been watching my lobo change shape before my eyes over the past month. I've had this lobo for over a year, and it has always looked like half a tennis ball, shape-wise. Lately it has been flattening out for no reason that I can think of. And the top of it has begun to show traces of bleaching, just slightly. Since it is in the front left corner of the tank, I placed my hand over it to see if I could create shade, which I could. So I grabbed a piece of scrap acrylic, peeled off the film from ...
