300 gallons of blog!

Details of a 300 gallon Marineland DD starphire display

  1. finished stand with lighting up next

I don't have a handy image of the stand painted, but here's a shot of gluing the two sheets of plywood together. It has proven to yield no deflection and should suffice as a catwalk around the tank. I have since cut out overflow spots and painted the top with 3 coats of primer.

Next up is hanging the lights. I had finished the light rack but wanted to buy some pre-wired Molex plugs for

  2. Stand Leveling

I was able to steal a few hours to work on the stand today. First, I had ordered these 4" stainless steel lag bolts, so I bolted the stand to the wall.

Then, I had to level a few places. Most things were pretty good, but the right side was about a 1/8" off high. I grabbed a piece of 100 grit sand paper and started to hand sand it. Then I felt like an idiot. I had my father ...

  4. Lighting

I was able to work on the main display lighting this last week, and here are a few images. The lighting will be comprised of a trio of lumen bright mini wide pendants, 20kK Radium bulbs, and 250W lumatek ballasts. The light rack also has 36 Cree LEDs on it driven by meanwell drivers (6 white, 30 royal blue). The LEDs will provide dawn/dusk control, as well as supplemental lighting during non-MH times (as I typically only run metal halide bulbs in the 4-6 hour range per day). I built a light ...

  5. Groundwork

First post here, but some of you may recognize this from the interwebs elsewhere. I have a 300 gallon tank sitting in my garage that hopes to be filled in the near future.

To make a long story short, we had a house built and I sold my 150 gallon setup. In the new house, which has a 4 bay garage (three wide, middle one is a tandem), I decided to close up part of the tandem for a fish room to look ...
