    Cheatomorpha is the best choice for you in California. It doesn't take root, grows well, and is bright green. There are some sea grasses that you can purchase online if you'd like to diversify somewhat.

    Usually the reason to keep live rock circulating in a dark environment is to help in the 'cooking' process of shedding trapped waste. This also avoids nuisance algae.

    I am using the CPR Aquapro refugium and have it set up with live sand some mud which I replace every now and then. Also have live rock and plants and it is lighted when the display tank lights go off. This refugium is a sump type.
