  1. Considering a Large Fluidized Sandbed Filter for Additional Biological Filtration.

It has been a while since the last update to my aquarium and things have started to go really well. Unfortunately most of my time has been devoted into settling into a new job but I have managed to keep up with my aquarium maintenance and I have even added a few fish. Unfortunately, most will agree that I have overstocked just a bit which has affected my water quality and aquarium in a few ways but not too drastically that it cannot be resolved with a little engineering and a few more pieces of ...

  2. Anemone & Leather strange... under attack?

A few days after my last post, when the new inhabitants had been about 10 or 12 days in the tank and I was happy that everyone was nicely extended, I noticed the Leather coral started to extend less its tentacles and the anemone also wasn't extending it's tentacles...

    Strange...

I though of several possibilities, water quality, chemical attack from another coral, under attack from crab?

Water quality seemed OK. My PH, KH and Ca tests were normal (Mg not so ...

  3. Skimmers are wonderful

Saturday night, my son helped me pump over 200g of saltwater into the 400g tank. Pumping the water into an upright pitcher, it seemed unlikely the water would get cloudy. Yet a day later it was somewhat murky, very different from the 215g running adjacent. Seeing the reef in nice clean water, it seemed like a poor choice moving those corals into the bigger tank.

Using a Reef Octopus skimmer I have on hand, I placed it on an inverted bucket (one with no handle) inside the display ...

  4. The 60g cube is on its stand

Last year after MACNA, I got a 60g cube tank made by AGE. It's a very pretty starphire glass tank with a PVC base. Undrilled, it needed an overflow. It's been in the backroom waiting for that to get done, and time passed like usual. About two weeks ago, the steel stand arrived which I blogged about. It's going to house the anemones and clownfish, so I need it ready to go now that I'm about to transfer all my livestock from the 215g into the 400g and the 60g at the same time.

  5. A few iPhone pictures from today

I was looking in my tank today and enjoying the corals. Everyone is about to be moved to the big tank, so I took a few quick pictures to share. What prompted this was my Bubble Tip Anemone, which was actually forming bubbles. I have seven currently, and none have displayed bubbles in a long time, so this half-hearted effort was still different from the norm. It would be nice to know why they have bubbles, and why they lose them.
