  1. Detritus eaters?

I cleaned out the AquaFuge HOB refugium of the detritus that's been accumulating for the past 4 months, and it was much worse than I thought. It was a silt-like layer of grey dirt that lined the bottom of the 'fuge. All that detritus might have been feeding the small patches of cyanobacteria and hair algae in my tank, so hopefully the cleaning will take care of it.

On one hand, I'm glad that it's been collecting in the 'fuge instead of the main tank, but then again it's a sign that ...

  2. Nomenclature for the Dazed and Confused Reefer

I’m a bit, well- confused…In the reef aquarium hobby and trade, we tend have our own ways of naming things. In fact, “common” names and scientific names get interchanged, mixed up, whipped to a froth, beaten to a pulp, twisted, and otherwise whacked out. Madness ensues…

Case in point- a recent discussion I saw between hobbyists, discussing the identity of a soft coral. It went something like, “That’s a Blue Xenia!” Another hobbyist chimed in, “Nah, it’s a Cespitularia!” Still another ...

  3. Day 210: 7 months old

As this day draws to its conclusion, I couldn't let it pass without mentioning it turned 7 months old today. 30 weeks of TLC and for the most part it has down very well.

  4. Biospheres - NP pellets

Coralvue sent me out some of the Biospheres NP pellets to try out on my tank. I've held off for a bit to make sure my tank was stable and in a good position to switch from the Vertex biopellets I've been running since early February.

This bag holds 1 liter of biopellets.

The biospheres are packed in a ziplock sealed bag within the main packaging that also can be resealed.

  5. How I clean filter socks

The one task I truly hate is cleaning filter socks. When I built my new sump for the 400g, I included a filter sock hanger and purchased four socks to rotate through as needed. These are the large 7" filter socks, not the smaller 4" type.

As they get dirty, I pull them out of the sump and place them in a container near the back door, and usually the next day they are put outside to be cleaned later. Well, I had one out there. A few weeks later I had another dirty sock sitting ...
