• US considers setting fire to Gulf of Mexico oil leak

Off the coast of Louisiana, the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform exploded and sank, leaving 11 workers missing and presumed dead, and a leak at the rate of about 200,000g of oil per day. Here's the full story:

Checking the news daily, I'm hoping that a solution will be found. The recent 100 ton funnel system failed, as the gas and oil froze at those depths, clogging up the pipes in the repair unit.

More news - the leak continues, but a small portion is being collected from the ocean. The solution hasn't been found yet, and now Florida is likely to see 'tar balls' on their shores.

      Typical government scandals.

"And a top official who oversaw offshore drilling has announced he is retiring.
Chris Oynes said he would step down at the end of this month.
There was no official comment on the reasons for the resignation of Mr Oynes from the Minerals Management Service (MMS). Senior officials there have been accused of becoming too close to the industry."

Shockingly, the latest efforts by BP did not work after all. Estimates of the oil spill into the gulf are much higher than originally thought, exceeded the Exxon Valdez spill of '89 by double, or more. Meanwhile, efforts continue to come up with a solution.

10 days later, the oil continues to pour into the gulf. BP has begun to collect some of the oil with their latest plan, but it hasn't stopped the leak. Here's the latest report from Reuters:

According to George Stephanopoulos tonight, the new official estimate is that 60,000 barrels are leaking out daily.

President Obama, in a presidential address to the nation, stated today that plans are in motion to tackle the oil leak.

With the ideas that are going to be implemented, the hope is that 90% of the oil leaking from the well will be captured by the end of the month. The drilling for relief wells should stop it entirely later this summer (August was predicted previously).

He stated that the U.S. will make BP pay for all the damages, and to help the states along the gulf recover from this event.

      Clean up:
Nearly 30,000 personal across 4 states
      1000s of ships responding
17,000 National Guard to help to stop the oil from coming ashore, clean the beaches, train the workers, and even help with processing claims. He told the 4 governors to mobilize these men.
Millions of gallons have been removed with burning, skimming, and other collection methods.
5.5 milliion feet of boom has been laid across the water to stop and absorb the oil.
New barrier islands are being formed to help block its approach
He stated that if there are problems with the programs, people should speak up so the govt can fix them.
Oil has caused damage to our coastline and its wildlife.
More oil and more damage is still to come.

For those businesses and workers along the gulf coast that are worried their livelihood is over, the president stated he will be sitting down with BP tomorrow to make sure everyone's compensation will be addressed.

A restoration plan is being formulated now to repair the damage and reverse it. Additionally, a national commission is being assigned the task to analyze the causes of this disaster, to offer up what additional safety and environmental standards can be put into place to avoid this ever happening again

A six month moratorium is in place to stop deep water drilling until safer methods can be determined.

He also addressed the issue of corruption between Big Oil and government, and new leadership is going to be brought in to build an organization that will be an oil industry watchdog.

President Obama then emphasized the need for alternatives to oil, so our dependence will be lessened and the need to drill one mile beneath the ocean wouldn't be our standard. He credited how consumers are now trying to be more energy conscious with their homes, but everyone has to rally together. It will cost a lot for clean energy, but the transition is inevitable. Other countries are embracing it, and he pointed out that we should be doing the same. Wind, solar-power are two approaches.

He pointed out that we were able to overcome obstacles to build tanks and plans during WWII, and later for us to put man safely on the moon, and this too can be accomplished.

      Let's hope he's right.

I put together a page here: http://nacl-h2o.ventshop.net/node/14 that has all the video feeds available that I know of from the underwater spill cams.

This link is where I got the feeds from but I corrected the sizes and remove the government junk.

      http://globalwarming.house.gov/spillcam

some are not running all the time but there is always one cam on the actual leak from what I can tell.

Well looks like New Orleans is now in the firing line for another disaster. Oil is now begining to seep into New Orleans' Lake Pontchartrain. And over the weekend oil and tarballs have begun to wash up on beaches in Texas as well.

A year after the oil spill was capped, BP has gone to court saying its damages agreement should be reduced. I read this here: Rise in gulf tourism prompts BP to ask for discount.

For all the damages the spill has brought, do you think they still have the right to file the petition?
