For the past few decades, hobbyists around the world have enjoyed keeping the Banggai cardinalfish in their home aquariums. Public aquariums keep large groups to display to their annual audience of visitors which number in the millions. Many hobbyists have raised their fry to be able to share them with others in their local area. Have you ever kept any in yours?

But where do they come from? Did you know there's an actual locale called the Banggai Islands? That's where these fish hail from, and why they were so named. Every year, MACNA brings in a big groups of speakers and these people provide a small image and a biography detailing who they are. Boring!! We want to get downright personal so we can know who they really are.

Sitting down with Christine Williams, the interview went like this:

1) Let's start off easy... What was your first job?
CW: Working for a company that made artificial limbs. It involved straps, velcro and other assorted items. (Favorite limb?) A guy that wanted a beer bottler opener embedded in his leg! It's important to have the right tool for the job.

This weekend in Costa Mesa, California, thousands of people are going to attend the annual event known as Reefapalooza. Will you? At this two day event, vendors are selling their wares or answering questions hobbyists have about their particular products. The website was taken down due to a serious infestation of SPAM. If you were following along on Facebook, I was posting updates daily. We updated our software to the latest version, which was key to locking down potential security leaks. To make this happen, the entire site had to be rebuilt from the ground up, and I want to thank Ed for doing his webmaster magic to reassemble everything so our site would work correctly. He removed over 25,000 spam-based blog entries!

Sept 28-30, 2012: DFWMAS is hosting MACNA 2012!

For the past 18 months, the Dallas Fort Worth Marine Aquarium Society has been working towards hosting MACNA (the Marine Aquarium Conference of North America) in 2012. For the past 6 months, contracts have been signed and an incredible amount of planning has gone into making sure this will be an event to be remembered.

The Sheraton in downtown Dallas is where MACNA will be held, during the last weekend of September. The hotel can hold 4000 reef addicts, so make plans now to attend. As many of you know, I'm a guy ...

One of the Board of Directors from MASNA contacted me today asking me to spread the word about a job opportunity for one lucky (or should I say well-suited) person. You do need to hold a PhD to qualify. We each know a lot of people, so help get the word out to help locate the right person.

On Friday, I received an email from Kate Rawlinson with the exciting news that the AEFW finally has a name.

When I read the attached 13 page PDF file, I was fascinated by the structure and research that was poured into identifying this tiny and most aggravating pest. Anyone that has kept SPS corals in the past five years has either heard of these or suffered their destructive nature.
