  1. Yes, the changeover is worth it. CC traps detritus, and a cucumber won't process it as it has too many sharp edges. Better to have sand. I didn't want to change it out for a long time, and nitrates were always an issue. Finally I just bit the bullet and made the change, and later wondered why I waited so long.
  2. Is it worth siphoning off the CC and replacing it with the sand? the CC i am using is pretty fine already, and only about 3/4 to 1" deep. i have a sand sifting star and am getting a tiger tail this week to keep it cleaner.
