    I would suggest using a 12V 1000 mA power supply (can be found on ebay for about $3 each). Two copper wires in your tank will quickly corrode... and the last thing you want in a tank with invertebrates is copper. I use stainless steel wire as the negative lead (cathode) and a piece of graphite (found at art supply store) as the positive anode. Cost totals less than $5 or so. Here's more detail:
